Russia extends counter sanctions until December 31, 2018
MOSCOW, Jun 30 (PRIME) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to prolong counter measures against Western sanctions until December 31, 2018, according to a relevant document released on the portal of legal information on Friday.
“To prolong from January 1 till December 31, 2018 retaliatory special economic measures envisaged by the Russian presidential decree from August 2014,” the document said.
On Wednesday, the E.U. prolonged economic restrictions against Russia until January 31, 2018 over the lack of implementation of the Minsk agreements.
In 2014, relations between Russia and the West deteriorated to their worse since the Cold War due to a military conflict in Ukraine. The West introduced sanctions against some Russian individuals and firms and further against the energy and banking sectors. In response, Russia prohibited food imports from some countries, including the U.S., the E.U., Canada, Australia, and Norway.
